There has been, for the past 3,000 years or so, a portage across a narrow neck of land between Charleston Lake and Red Horse Lake. The portage area is now in Charleston Lake Provincial Park. Just this week, the Trail Crew of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, headed by John MacLeod, and with help from both the Park and its Friends group, completed a long section of boardwalk on what were very often wet and muddy sections of the 400 metre trail. This will make the portage easier, but will also help prevent damage to that fragile landscape.

Explore The Arch is brand new-just up and running. Its development has been in the works for just over a year, with plenty of leg, cycle and paddle work to map out these trails and routes. This is in very large part a community venture, helped along with a staff program from the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, funding by Industry Canada and contributions by municipal partners. The project was nurtured by the many individuals of the Biosphere Trails Council, but special thanks to GIS guru and organic farmer, Chris Wooding, as well as renowned cartoonist who designed our logos, David Parkins.
