Elizibethtown Kitely Historical Driving Tour

Elizabethtown Kitley is rich in history. Along the driving tour, Churches, Mills, Inns, Taverns and Cheese Factories have noted. Please see the web site for more detailed information. Inns and taverns served a large role in Elizabethtown-Kitley, as the main road from Brockville to Perth ran straight through the Township, necessitating meals and over-night accommodation for travelers along the route. Inns and taverns were usually combined for the convenience of the travelers and were used as social gathering places by locals.

According to a 1905 issue of Canadian Dairyman, the cheese factories in the greater Brockville region were known as the best in Canada. Cheese factories thrived in the Township because of good developed farmland and proximity to the larger town of Brockville. Rural cheese factories proliferated because horse-drawn wagons could not transport the milk quickly enough or keep it cold enough over long distances.
